REGARDING YOUR PAPERS AND ASSIGNMENT

DEAR STUDENTS:

Your papers are located by the plant on the pile of rocks in the inner sanctum of the Language Center Office (D#114). They are located in a brown folder and the RESUMES are folded.

THE FOLLOWING IS YOUR ASSIGNMENT FOR NEXT WEEK:

1) Find your papers in the brownish yellow envelope entitled SOPH. COMP!

(If you do not find your most recent paper, please send it to me by attachment. If your paper has NO CORRECTIONS on it, that means that I NEED TO DISCUSS YOUR PAPER WITH YOU IN CLASS NEXT WEDNESDAY. IT DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU DID NOT DO A GOOD JOB OR THAT THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG, OKAY?!, IT JUST MEANS THAT I WANT TO GO OVER THE PAPER WITH YOU. Please, in the meanwhile, try to rewrite your paper according to the MODEL I provided you with...)

2. Save the original electronic version of your STATEMENT OF PURPOSE [only!] and add my comments (if you agree with them) and make corrections or changes AND THEN POST BOTH VERSIONS ON THIS BLOG ENTRY LIKE THIS:

VERSION #1 (PRE-RJ-EDITING)
.....

VERSION #2 (POST-RJ-EDITING)
...

[PLEASE TAKE OFF ALL IDENTIFYING INFORMATION AND BRING A HARD COPY OF THE NEWEST VERSION AND THE PREVIOUS VERSION TO CLASS NEXT WEEK.]

3. As for the resumes/CV's, try to add in the corrections I made, which are probably mostly only structural and bring a hard copy to class. Try to improve them if you can by looking at others online. For the most part, I believe that you do not need an OBJECTIVE ... JUST DO YOUR BEST WITH THE CV/RESUMES... go online and try to improve what you have... [We are stressing the SOP's more than the RESUMES...but still try to improve what you can ... for your future...]

4. I will give you back your LETTERS OF INTRODUCTION/COVER LETTERS on WEDNESDAY.

5. Please do your best and email me if you have questions...

Statement of Purpose
A 2006 graduate of the Dong Hwa University Department of English, I am writing t his letter to express my interest in applying for the position of designer at your company beginning October 25, 2006.
When I was just a little girl, my mother liked to dress and make me up like an adorable princess. In my wardrobe, I had a lot of lovely dresses like Cinderella and Snow White outfits. As long as my parents got visitors in the house, I would go to dress myself up in different clothes every few minutes and showed what I wore in front of them. From this time on, I began to develop my own ideas in costume designing, and this is also when my interest in costume designing began to grow.
When I was a junior high school student, I looked for more opportunities of getting in the field of dress designing. I joined the dress designing club to learn some basic knowledge. Then, to be more professional, I took some training courses in my senior high school. In the meanwhile, I took part in many contests, big and small, to increase my experiences. I remember I won the third place in one of the contests. Then, in the winter vacation 2002, I went to Clothes Ninety-nine Company to take an advanced lessons. At this time, I have decided to be a dress designer as my future career.
I particularly like to dress in black and white. I believe the two colors can show women’s figure and charm perfectly and make them look more beautiful. This is one of the reasons I like JOJO Natural Dress. Besides, JOJO focuses on simplicity and grace which I think is the best style for women. And the sportswear combines elements of leisure and fashion which let women remain beautiful when they exercise. My ideas about dresses are really very close to JOJO Natural Dress and I hope I could get this position in the designing department. I believe my experiences, ideas, and talent will fulfill to JOJO’s requirements and I will also devote myself to JOJO Natural Dress.

Hailing from Taichung County, I have been educated with ample and sufficient teaching resource and materials. As a result of my parents’ highlight on children’s education, I am early maturing toward learning and I set a life goal for myself as being a teacher. Ever since I was in the process of leaning, teaching have been among my interests. Actually, I used to be a modal student in class for I was diligent and I cared for people; hence, I had many chances to assist my classmates no matter what they ask me to deal with, including instructing homework and helping them out to write assignments. Through this experience, I received a sense of achievement as well as gained a passion of being this aspired role in the future.

Truly, tracing back my memories, the aspiration that I used t write on my composition book is being a teacher. Time passed by, my ideal career has persisted for years. As regards to the reason why I want to be a teacher, I would say it is because teaching is the noblest way to give something back to the society. Teaching is not like any service industry, the teacher and the student can profit from each other. Moreover, I am longing for becoming a teacher because I am aspiring to great knowledge. For me, knowledge functions as a vehicle carrying me to any place. I feel I am energized and fulfilled due to making what I have learned practical.

Since being a teacher is influential to students, it is also challenging. There are three important traits that teachers should be required: profession, patience, and devotion. First of all, I am qualified because I am getting professional. During the college years, I study in English department and I gain abundant of wisdom both in profession part and life experience. As for patience, I have been an English tutor for a 6 –year-old boy and I learned to be patient without showing any irritated emotion because it I teacher’s unshirkable duty to help students fully understand the questions. Speaking of devotion, I have heard one respectable teacher said, “Teaching is not a profession, it is a passion!” Because I have seen many teachers give classes in a dreary way, I tell myself not fall into this set pattern and always keep my zeal for being a lively teacher.

All in all, to utilize my qualifications as a teacher, I will make an effort to reach all requests that should fulfill. I believe I will be am excellent teacher and do my part well in Taiwan’s education filed. Although there are still lots of education system problems in Taiwan after the implement of 9 Year Integrated Education, I hold a positive view that in the future, Taiwan’s educational circles is worthy of expecting.

VERSION #1 (PRE-RJ-EDITING)
As an undergraduate English major that is deeply amazed by the world of literature, I am writing this letter to apply for entering your school, National Cheng Kung Graduate Institute of Foreign Language and Literature, for a chance of advanced education. I am a sophomore at National Dong Hwa University now, but I believer it is always better for one to know the goal and prepare for it early. After exposing to more and more literature works, I gradually realize my favor in studying literature as time goes on. Especially, I prefer to study literature before the Renaissance time period, which is one crucial emphasis of your school.
My interest toward English literature begins early in my junior high school life, and it has thrived year after year. One English teacher of mine enlightened my joy of reading English literature works. Although I started reading only simple texts like fairy tales, I had much fun within the readings. Later, my reading ability getting better and better. I started to read short novels. I began to get accustomed to read English works. When I applied for the English Department at National Dong Hwa University, I wrote a book review on one of my favorite book, “The Elephant Man”, which is one of my favorite books.
After studying in English department, I began learning English literature works. In terms of my interest in literature, my pleasure of studying in is evident. Many literature works not only have beautiful words, phrases, and sentences but also raise many either underlying or apparent issues related to problems of being a human. Sometimes the external topic describes obstacles at an ancient time period, but readers nowadays can still feel the strong compassion. Accordingly, I think literature can influence human society in a profound way. The function of it is like being a voiceless teacher. The difference is that real teachers emphasize more on educate students in the school, but literature works can educate people in all ages everywhere and at any time. Besides, regarding to my future occupation, I decided to become an English teacher in the future, in which way I can work happily with both my interest and profession. Thus, to fulfill my goal, I took the entrance exam of taking the Teacher Education Program and started taking the teaching courses since Fall 2004.
I find my particular interest and joyfulness in studying literature before the Renaissance time period. I like literature works, such as the mythology, medieval dramas, and sonnets and plays in Renaissance period of time. The reason of my determination of studying further in this field is because of the variety of literature in the old days. Compared with modern literature, which also deals with many serious contemporary concerns, for me literature in the earlier time period is, in a way, more mysterious and intriguing. People in previous eras did not live conveniently with high-tech inventions to exchange information, lifestyles, languages as well as problematic matters. As a result, many of our ancestors fortunately remained different and various life and literature in differing geographic areas. Another reason for the attraction of those aged literatures is that the long term of time. With the development of hundreds of thousands of years literatures in old time periods can divide into many time periods and genres, which adds the diversity. One of my teachers suggests students to read more literature of the old days. He explains that only good literature could pass the challenges of time and survive until now. Therefore, they contain invariable values and are worthy reading, appreciating, discussing, and analyzing.
I have done some research regarding the teachers and courses in your graduate school. You have many professors master in English and American literature. I believe your school can allow me to utilize my profession and passion in literature to honor the school and dedicate my knowledge in teaching, my future aim. I sincerely hope that you can give me the opportunity to study in your school.

VERSION #1(PRE-RJ-EDITING)
My interest is to help people with different language to communicate among one another in terms of interpretation. Furthermore, with the well-grounded humanist education, language proficiency training and other professional fields of studies at NDHU, I have been trained to be a productive college student, which allows me to acquire the least criteria for an interpreter.
When I was in senior high, I was absolutely absorbed in the field of English aside from other subjects. The simple reason why I found English attractive was that I could make ostentatious use of English to talk with foreigners in front of my friends. Nevertheless, as I entered the college, this kind of childish behavior has transformed into a different one. I found "communication" has for a long time offered me a great sense of achievement during my English learning process. I enjoy playing the intermediary role of helping different language exchanges. To the job market, this kind of intermediary role is the interpreter that I look forward to be.
To be a good interpreter, confident performance and agile response are as all-important as the proficient linguistic training. For almost a year, I have worked in the well-known resort in Hualien, Belle Vista Hotel, where I was drilled to quickly respond to customers' demands and always stay calm no matter how chaotic the situation might be. In addition, I have another job in cram school, where I must react in a short time to associate with students in the class. Those work experience, in my view, have provided me with various techniques that is necessary for an interpreter, or at least, those experience have simulated surroundings that an interpreter would face for me.
Your company, with its excellent accomplishments in providing ultra-chic interpreters for international occasions, is just the organization I would like to join. Aside from the high-quality output of your company, I am also fascinated about your cultivation of interpreters. Your completed system of training which offer a program for interpreters recharging their batteries really strengthens the expertise of interpreters in your company. As a whole, I am a hard-working will-to-be interpreter who has related experience to interpretation. I am convinced that with my expertise and your company's well-grounded training system, I would contribute to the firm and I believe I would be an asset to you firm.

VERSION #1 (PRE-RJ-EDITING)

My name is xxx and I am now a sophomore of the English Department at National Dong Hwa University. My hometown is a country of Tainan County. The place where I have been lived for 17 years is a quiet and peaceful village. Because I entered the
university in Hualien, I was far away from home and now I am living in the dormitory with three other roommates. The reason for majoring in English is because I am interested in this language and I desire to speak it fluently. One of my goals is to use English as naturally as possible and I hope that I am able to combine my interest with the job which I will take after graduation in the next few years. Therefore, I am finding a position which allows me to apply my English skills such as reading and writing to translate publications.

Even though I started to learn English when I was in junior high school, I have learned it at the cram school at the age of 11 and my interest in English began to grow at that time. I remember that at the beginning of learning English, I respect my teacher of
the cram school very much because this was my first time to be so close to a foreign language. The teacher is a married Chinese woman who is good- looking and speaks
fluent English. Besides, I also like her teaching attitude because she is very patient and gentle in answering our questions. More importantly, she promoted my interest in the first foreign language which is English, of course. To say it another way, I view English as an interesting and useful foreign language because of her enlightenment.

I do not know exactly when I paid more attention to foreign cultures than local culture, but I know for certain that I prefer foreigners’ appearances especially the white
people. In order to get closer to my preference, I made up my mind to speak English as fluently as native speakers. Although I understand that it is impossible for non-native speakers to speak English as naturally as natives, I still have the passion to learn it as best as I can. I concede that one of my reasons for learning English is that I am attracted by
white people’s good looking. In addition, another reason is that foreign cultures such as movies, music and publications are so attractive that I cannot help but to enjoy and learn them. In my daily life, I like to read publications which can be both Chinese and English when I have free time; in other words, reading is also my interest. Among different kinds of publications, I especially like magazines and novels because I think they are more interesting.

We all know that human beings cannot be one hundred percent perfect, so everyone has his/her own advantages and weaknesses. In terms of my advantages, I think
that patience and carefulness are suitable for the job of translating publications. Usually,
it takes a longer period of time to finish translating a piece of works and this job needs people who are careful when checking the appropriate words and phrases which are used in the translations. Moreover, what I have learned at university helps me in the field of translation. I have learned the specific skills of translating works including literatures and other types of articles because the department which I study in is professional concerning literary works. Accordingly, I believe that I have the ability to apply my professional translating skills to the job.

Since I am finding a position which allows me to provide my English skills such as reading and writing to translate publications, I hope that the professional translating methods which I have learned at university will be useful. Even though I am not good at English speaking, I have confidence in my English reading and writing. To say it another way, I have the ability to comprehend the contents of English publications and to translate them into Chinese. That is exactly what I can offer to your company and it is what you need for prospering your company; consequently, I sincere hope that I will have the opportunity to promote your company.

Although I understand that it is impossible for non-native speakers to speak English as naturally as natives, I still have the passion to learn it as best as I can. I concede that one of my reasons for learning English is that I am
attracted by white people’s good looking; another reason is that foreign cultures such as movies, music and publications are so attractive that I cannot help but to enjoy and learn them. In my daily life, I like to read publications both Chinese and English when I have free time; in other words, reading is also one of my interests. Among the different kinds of publications, I especially like magazines and novels because I think they are much more interesting.

Of course, everyone has his or her own weaknesses and advantages. In my opinion, patience and diligence are two of my characteristics, and I think both of them can be part of the personality of a translator. Usually, it takes a longer period of time to finish translating a piece of works and one must be careful when checking the appropriate words and phrases which are used in the translations. Moreover, what I have learned at the university has helped me in the field of translation. I have learned the specific skills of translating works including literatures and other types of articles because the department which I study in is professional concerning literary works. Accordingly, I believe that I have the ability to apply my professional translating skills to the job.

Since I wish to find a position which will allow me to apply my English skills such as reading and writing to translate publications, I hope that the professional
translating methods which I have learned at university will be useful. And that is exactly what I can offer to your company and perhaps it is what you need for prospering your company; consequently, I sincere hope that I will have the opportunity to work with you in order to promote the goals and objectives of your company.

Statement of Purpose
My name is Zoe Chen, and I am now a student in the National Dong Hwa University. To accomplish my dream to be an English major, by which I can immerse myself in the field of literature and language, I applied for Dong Hwa in the spring of 2003. Besides, on account of favoring getting along with children and enjoying the achievement from teaching them, I also take educational curriculums as my minor so that I can have the chance to be an English teacher in the future.
My enthusiasm about education can be traced back to the time when I was a junior high. Because I could not even memorize all the English alphabets before going to junior high, I was worried that I would fall behind other students in the class. Fortunately, I met a nice English teacher, who to some degree helped me build the confidence of learning and thus I got progress , and then I know that how a pupil can be changed and affected by a teacher.
As far as the reason that why I want to be an English teacher is concerned, it has something to do with my father’s occupation- a teacher, too. During my process of growing up, more or less I know what a teacher should act or do from my father, and I think it is quite great that a teacher can interact with different generations and omit the gap. Furthermore, being a teacher can also be a challenging job that I can
learn how to amplify my wisdom as well as patience when confronting various problems.
Because I am a Christian, I had served those children in the church since I was 16. Every week I might have to prepare a story and a song to teach these kids, and during this process, I discovered that I do have the ability to lead a group of people. Moreover, I enjoyed the time when I could correct or even learn something from them, for I think teaching is also a way that fosters mutual learning.
Even though I have such an ideal goal to be carried out, still I need an opportunity to make my dream come true. Shou-Feng Junior High School is exactly the place in which I want to work. I appreciate not only the unsophisticated teaching atmosphere here, but also the organized school administration, for I deeply believe it will help promote my quality of being a good teacher. All in all, being an English teacher is what I pursue and what I long for to steel myself. I sincerely hope that one day I can get the chance to work in Shou-Feng and return what I could to our society, to our next generation.

Statement of Purpose

With the passion of sharing what I know and learn from the life as well as study, I would be an indispensable for junior high school teacher.

My personality which is necessary for teacher was formed in my dear family. I used to share my experiences with my family and classmate, it’s because I have a
father who would like to share and talk. My father, as a taxi driver, both of his job and
personalities, he is communicative and easygoing. My mom is wise, brilliant, and very aggressive and ambitious. All of this influence me a lot.
Teacher before college arouse my potential of being an English teacher. After I joined the English cram school, I instantly fell in love with English. The way they taught, the way they shared and expressed themselves really made me love English. Later, from the second year of junior high school to the end of senior high
school, I have been the English teacher assistant for 5 years. By helping teacher handling tasks and answering classmates’ questions, I learned much about how to be a
teacher, what must a teacher do and what are the problem classmates would have when studying. Until now, whenever I have a chance to go back visit my teachers, they told their colleagues in front of me that I am the best teacher assistant they have ever seen, and they are sure I will be a excellent teacher the students need.
The clubs and the courses I attended and took during my college life not only made my college life much more colorful, but also meaningful. For the oral class, I was a English tutor of 7 students who came from different departments. I prepared the teaching material myself and also corrected the homework. I thought it was challenging but interesting. In other clubs such as the manager of a volleyball team, the cadre in student association, and member in first-aid club, band club, and the will-hunting group which hold ctivities for child have problem with mental or financial part. I am good at how to take care of people, facing the problem and solving it because all this clubs and activities. In my oral class, we have to do so much presentation and speech reports including perform a drama, hence, the ability of working up information and giving a lecture is already obtained.
I will use all I have learned when I be a teacher. First, I will put much effort on communicating with the parents. The more understanding and interaction between the teacher and the parents, the better learning quality the students will get. Second, I will also pay attention to what food the students eat every. The nutrition they gain is very important in their age, for health body and efficient learning. Last but not least, I will apply all I have learned within and out of the class. I can tell them the Greek and Roman mythology and the Bible stories. What’s more, I am able to hold little games which I learned from the will-hunting group, therefore the class will learn from playing and realize ”learning by doing”.
With the skill and personalities I own, I think I will be a successful as long as I get this job.
